Every journey toward sustainable greatness begins with a fundamental question: Do our leadership selection processes elevate role models for all, or do we too heavily reward competence and credentials?

Competence and experience matter. But without integrity, genuine caring, and a servant purpose, the seeds of failure are planted early.

There are four qualities that leaders who build enduring success share:

  • A growth mindset – They understand they do not know everything.
  • A servant purpose – They work for the benefit of others.
  • Trust and integrity – They continually build trust through their actions.
  • Caring and respect – They genuinely love people.

At the center of all four is humility.

We forgive humble leaders for their mistakes; we lose trust in those who believe they know everything.

I shared stories of my friend and mentor, Bo Schembechler, reminders that legacy is not found in trophies, titles, or buildings; those fade. What lasts is the spirit we awaken that aligns a team for sustainable success.

Bo’s influence endures not because of what he achieved, but because of how he shaped people, challenging them to live with courage, humility, and purpose. Leaders who live at this level move beyond personal success. They leave behind a way of being that continues to guide others long after they are gone.

Some people never die because their values keep showing up in the lives they touched.
