Uncover and Nurture Your Foundation of Greatness

We are all insecure. Even the most accomplished leaders we’ve coached at FS/A have shared their self-doubt. Many have confessed to feeling impostor syndrome, of being haunted by the fear that if others saw their true selves, their credibility or prestige would vanish.
As a systems engineer who has spent 46 years studying leaders of sustainably successful teams, I’ve noticed a striking pattern: The most grounded and successful leaders understand who they are. They don’t lead from a place of fear; rather, they operate from profound internal clarity. They’re energized by a life purpose that transcends achievement. This clarity fosters internal confidence—a foundation that supports them when inevitable storms arise.
Here’s a beautiful truth: Each of us has a Foundation of Greatness within us.
This foundation is something you uncover and nurture. Over time, with deliberate awareness and support, it transforms into the foundation from which your unique sustainable greatness flows.
The System Beneath Sustainable Success
Through our work, we have discovered that when the right components are systematically in place, the sustainable success engine can function with only minor adjustments along the way. We help individuals and teams clarify three elements that constitute the sustainable success engine—their Core Identity:
- Vision – Design a compelling picture of the future you seek to create.
- Purpose – What meaningful actions can you take today to achieve that Vision?
- Guiding Principles – These are the values that govern your behavior, particularly under pressure. Identify 4-5 principles that guide all decision-making. (We have found caring and trust are two musts.)
When you combine your competencies—your natural talents, refined skills, and accumulated knowledge—with your Core Identity, you naturally operate from your Foundation of Greatness, which allows you to navigate complexity with clarity and character.
This foundation is not one-size-fits-all. No two people enter the world with the same gifts or share identical experiences. That’s what makes the Foundation of Greatness of each individual unique—and why discovering and aligning with it can be so transformative.
It Begins With How We Feel
It all begins with how we feel when we’re treated with respect, when we’re heard, when we’re dismissed, or when we’re betrayed. Our feelings are closely connected to our Guiding Principles—those internal standards that dictate what feels right or wrong in our relationships and environments.
Guiding Principles are more than mere words on a wall. They
- influence our decisions;
- influence how we treat others and how we anticipate being treated; and
- offer the emotional signals that indicate when we’re safe . . . or not.
When we operate in alignment with our Guiding Principles, our brains release oxytocin and serotonin—our happiness hormones. We feel connected, calm, and capable. This is the state from which Peak Performance emerges.
But when our principles are violated—when fairness, trust, or respect is broken—our bodies release stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These can overwhelm us with feelings of fear, frustration, and isolation. Over time, this stress can not only sabotage our potential but also compromise the health of entire teams and organizations.
A More Confident, Aligned Life
We all want to feel safe and know we belong. By clarifying and honoring our Guiding Principles, we gain that sense of security, not because everything will always go smoothly, but because we understand how we will choose to respond.
This is how we become more secure in our identity, nurture the courage to present ourselves authentically, and access our full potential.
We can step into leadership, take the shot in the final seconds, present in front of the board, or say “yes” to a life partner—not because we know how things will turn out, but because we understand who we are and what we stand for.
In the next blog, we will explore the second key to your Foundation of Greatness: your Purpose and Vision—your reason for being and the impact you are called to make. Following that, we will delve into Competencies—the gifts and strengths you bring to your work at the highest level.
